Newport Modern, Estate of the Day

admin on Jun 18th 2007

Today's home is an interesting study, a modern home that seems to be currently owned by people not entirely in tune with the modern design scheme. The Newport, RI home was built in 1991 in the International Style of Le Corbusier and has views of the ocean and Narragansett Bay from the rooftop deck. The lower floors offer large entertaining area and private bedroom suites. The top floor includes a second kitchen and seating area. The space is very interesting but the current owners have decorated it with a pastiche of styles, part beach house, part traditional New England and, here and there, a nod to the house's structure with pieces like a Le Corbusier chair (albeit paired with a worn Oriental rug). . It is listed at $2.1 million. After the jump, a dining table that would look wonderful in a classic house but looks out of place here.

Ameya Preserve

admin on Jun 18th 2007

I like the idea behind the Ameya Preserve. The property is designed to be an eco-friendly community in Paradise Valley, Montana. The Ameya Preserve will draw 100 percent of its energy from a wind farm and will use a water recycling system to irrigate the property. The preserve will also be part of a program where greenhouse gas emissions are offset by planned tree-planting on other property owned by the developer.

What sets this development apart is a unique program involving "cultural directors" who will provide residents with learning experiences ranging from fine cuisine to music to archaeological digs. Leaders in astronomy, archeology, biology, environmentalism, literature and visual arts will spend months at a time at Ameya as part of its Discoveries-in-residence program to study and share their work with residents and the world. There will also be a master guide program where residents can experience world class fly-fishing, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife photography, among many other pursuits. The development will be home to pre-designed homes, custom and estate lots. The goal is to build a small amount of homes on less than 500 acres and keep most of the 11,000 acres of land as open space.

The Plans For Britain’s Next Major Country House

admin on Jun 17th 2007

One ambitious developer, one crumbling mansion and the plans are set for England's next big megahouse. The Sunday Times reports that Mike Spink, a developer, has paid £42 million for the 570-acre Park Place estate on the river near Henley-on-Thames. Mike Spink plans to spend a few years and a few million pounds turning the home into a palace to tempt a Russian billionaire or other deep-pocketed person into spending anywhere from £60 million to £100 million.

The property, which is in the village of Remenam, has has 30,000 sq ft of living space and spent four decades as a boarding school. The property includes a main house that dates back to the early 18th century, three large houses, ten rented cottages and another eight in need of repair, a boathouse, a stable block, two golf courses and a a four-story tower. It's an amazing property but Spink must be somewhat troubled by the specter of Updown Court, the massive mansion in Windlesham, Surrey that went on the market for £70 million in 2005 and is still waiting for a buyer.

Vodianova and Portman’s Pad, Estate of the Day

admin on Jun 17th 2007

It would be easy to hate Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova if only she weren't by all accounts, such a nice person and one who did not have an easy upbringing before the charmed life she currently enjoys. Braden Keil of the NY Post reports that Vodianova and her husband Justin Portman have listed their three-bedroom apartment at 72 Reade Street in New York City. Portman bought the home as a bachelor pad for $2,291,500 in 1999. Now he and his model wife are decamping to London.

The home, which is probably getting cramped given that the couple is expecting their third child, has an indoor reflecting pool, media room, sauna, three separate terraces (northern, southern, and eastern) and an outdoor infinity-edge soaking pool off the master bedroom. The sixth floor penthouse is over 4100 square feet and has direct access through a private key locked elevator. It has all sorts of details that are Zen and quirky like a table with a parasol in the master suite and art sourced from around the world. You have to have a certain cool to make this place work. If you are into cozy this probably isn't your pad. This is a rock star home, the type that Lenny Kravitz or someone else with friends to entertain and babes to impress might easily enjoy. It's easy to suspect that this place was probably a feature in Portman's favor when he was pursuing young Miss Vodianova. It is listed at $11 million. After the jump, buy this and get your own supermodel.

Teton Pines, Estate of the Day

An island in Wyoming? Well, sort of, this home in the Teton Pines area of Wilson, Wyoming is surrounded by water. The two acre estate has a full caretakers suite, five bedrooms total, plenty of fireplaces and a large gourmet kitchen. The home has an exterior of stacked stone masonry. Inside the home is a bit of a melding of faux Tuscan with a touch of Wild West. The home also has an 850 bottle wine cellar, three-car garage, large windows and an expansive patio. It is listed at $8.8 million. After the jump, in the winter you can ice skate without leaving home.

Plans For A Tower In West Palm Beach

admin on Jun 16th 2007

When one thinks of locations for the world's next megastructure West Palm Beach, Florida doesn't immediately spring to mind. The town however may end up as a the home to a Space-Needle-style structure that could head 1,550 feet in the sky and be home to a hotel, observatory, dance club and office space. The West Palm Beach Observatory is one of three proposals the city is looking at for a city-owned piece of land on Okeechobee Boulevard near the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The structure would dwarf all the structures in the area, in fact it would be the second highest tower in the world.

Other proposals include the Palm Beach Financial Center, a 27-level glass tower of curving glass with a hotel, offices and retail space and the Crocker project, a more traditional building with a hotel, office space, condos and a theater. It seems unlikely to me, at least, that the massive tower project is one that will suit the denizens of West Palm Beach but it is certainly an ambitious idea.

Vancouver Condo, Estate of the Day

admin on Jun 15th 2007

Wow, who knew a place once owned by Axl Rose would be so elegant? This Vancouver penthouse at 1000 Beach Ave. was once owned by the Guns N' Roses singer and also to Canucks hockey star Pavel Bure but it was, according to the Globe and Mail, an empty concrete shell until the current owner came along. The owner, who bought in 2004 for around $7 million and turned the home into a spectacular showplace but never moved in. The home has around 7,600 square feet of space (including a lower floor guest suite). It has four backlit rooms of white onyx and a mezzanine that has a floating cube offering unique office space. It has a private parking unit and a private elevator and comes with its own boat slip. It is listed at $18.2 million, which if it sells, would be a record for Vancouver. After the jump, yet another gorgeous white bath tub.
